Maison Martin Margiela From the Garden Sample

The new fragrance from Margiela's Replica series, inspired by the idea of a sunny afternoon spent gardening.

Our Margiela From the Garden Review:

Margiela From the Garden opens immediately crisp and green, with the "sunny afternoon in the garden" vibe present right from the beginning. The citrus is juicy and tart, especially with the blackcurrant, which is very present here. The geranium contributes to the tartness as well. The style of green is crisp and fresh, like authentic garden plant stems. If you haven't tried tomato leaf as a note, no need to worry about this smelling like tomatoes in general. The leaf itself is just a fresh green aromatic scent; you're not going to smell like ketchup!

The grapefruit and green mandarin contribute to the sunny vibe, so they did a good job at making that sunny afternoon from the product description come through. This isn't a petrichor type of earthy scent that smells like wet soil after rain; it's much more upbeat and happy than that, while still having a refined quality to it.

The geranium bridges the gap between the citrus and the rose, and makes for a smooth transition from the opening through the middle towards the later phases. The rose certainly becomes more present, but we would never call this a rose-centered fragrance at any point. It's just used to add nuance to the garden, and the garden is still primarily green, not floral.

The patchouli never becomes very noticeable to us; it blends well with the other green notes in adding shadow and depth to the tomato leaf without ever taking over or getting outright dirty.

Overall we think Margiela (and perfumer Olivier Cresp) did a great job at making a scent that, as with many in the Replica line, is so much more interesting and has more depth than the typical designer release. From the Garden also balance herbal green without getting too dirty, and does a great job at keeping it crisp and clean, yet without sacrificing the garden-esque feel to it either. Very well done for what it's going for!
