The Original Concept
We started DecantPlanet based on curated "Best Of" collections by note, occasion, and more. While we've expanded since then, creating and maintaining these lists is still our favorite part! (You can see all of our Best Of lists here.)
How We Decide What to Stock
1. Fragrances going on "Best Of" lists. This has nothing to do with what we think will sell well or make the most money - it's solely about what we think are the best scents for each category.
2. Fragrances requested by people like you. For example, we have many product listings on the site that are currently sold out. We monitor the restock notifications sign-ups and try to stock what people request.
3. New releases from major niche fragrance houses that look interesting or we anticipate high demand for.
4. Rare or discontinued fragrances. Some of the brands that we aim to stock anything and everything by include DS & Durga, Zoologist, and Comme des Garcons.
Although DecantPlanet of course needs to make money to exist as a business, we don't just choose fragrances to stock based on profit. That would take away a lot of the fun for us as fragheads!
Our Love for Fragrance
Our favorite part about fragrance is that it can represent so many different things to different people. Some people want to feel attractive with a suave vanilla perfume. Some want to feel professional with a crisp vetiver cologne, while others want to feel energized by a bright burst of orange blossom. Some want to smell like a wild horse in a barn (yes, really!) while others just want to smell like clean laundry.
In our opinion, there's no one right way to enjoy fragrance. You don't even have to wear it to enjoy it! There are fragrance that are favorites for us that we rarely even wear, and enjoy owning just to be able to smell.
We want to provide a welcoming place for everyone, whether you're deep into avant-garde niche and indie fragrances or just looking for an easy everyday wear.
Our Values
It can be hard to find a business whose values you align with. Sometimes it's hard to even find out what those values are! We also think it's important, now more than ever, for businesses to stand for something. We want to be completely transparent about what we stand for, and how those values are put into practice:
1. Giving 5% of profits to charity and causes. For example, lately these include a focus on groups that have been under attack by the current administration such as immigrants and trans people. If someone has a problem with those groups and doesn't want to buy from us, we are completely fine making less money as a result.
2. Being mindful about where we source our decanting materials from. For example, avoiding Amazon, and avoiding any companies that openly support Trump.
3. Being carbon neutral (and actually carbon negative!). The perfume industry creates a lot of waste - from the over-the-top packaging to the amount of plastic involved. We buy carbon neutral credits from COTAP to ensure that we're giving more to the environment than we take. We also use 100% recyclable mailers made from 30% recycled materials along with several other eco-friendly packaging items.
4. Respecting workers. We're committed to never starting anyone's pay at less than $25/hour, even for the most entry level work. Among other aspects, we also let anyone work from home for any role that doesn't require physical work.
Customer Service
We want every person who shops with us to feel good about their experience. We don't want to be penny pinchers who won't take care of a customer situation just because they legally don't have to. We treat customers the way we like to be treated as customers ourselves!
